In October, YouthCon took place and we had another KYCC meeting. Read all about it (as well as a statement on the situations in Dover & Manston and information about the House of Commons debate) in this blog post.

BYC’s YouthCon

Starting off with some networking with fellow MYPs, we quickly moved into our first activity named “Keys, Locks, and Doors” which aimed to help us think of problems and solutions to topics in our political landscape. This taught us to engage with decision makers in our area, and enabled us to make advocacy plans to quash issues we see. This was followed by a meeting with Devon, Cornwall, and Isles of Scilly PCC Alison Hernandez who told us about policing from the perspectives of a PCC and how young people can help them fufill their roles, and included debate on topic such as the legalisation of cannabis and current stop and search policy. The convention was then ended by a deep dive into the Health and Wellbeing report, showing us the issues that affected young people nationally as well as just in the South East. The report can be found here.

Whilst on the topic of UKYP, our manifesto has launched! Read it here.

KYCC’s October Meeting

The meeting opened with a vote to add the right to recall to our constitution, which allows th expulsion of a Chair/Vice Chair if they fail to follow the standards of the role and if multiple attempts to resolve such has failed.

We then moved into campaign groups, for me being the Feeling Safe in Kent group, in which we reviewed the design of our anti-bullying poster which we will send to schools. Some alterations were requested, and the finished poster was reviewed and confirmed in an online meeting held today. In said online meeting, we also discussed the attack on an immigration centre in Dover as well as reports of worsening conditions at an immigration centre in Manston. Both situations are horrible ones and I express my sorrow to all those involved. Myself and some of my colleagues have put a request in for KYCC to make an official statement on the Dover incident, as well as getting a young person currently in the Manston centre to act as a representative for their community to KYCC.

In the UKYP project group, we discussed the House of Commons debate (more info below), as well as the release on the full Make Your Mark report. We’ve agreed to repivot the direction of our group in response to teh report, to ensure that the views of our constituents are well represented.

HOUSE OF COMMONS: UKYP will be in the House of Commons on the 4th of November from 08:15 to 16:45. The gallery will not be open for viewing. Anyone who wishes to watch this event should go to parliamentlive.tv where a live broadcast will begin at 11:20.
