Note – As you can likely tell from the title of this blog, I’m moving to monthly updates. I’ll aim to publish between the 28th and the 2nd each month. Want more frequent updates? Follow me on all socials @hadyncutler.

It’s been an interesting month, so let me break it down for you.

House of Commons sitting

On the 4th November, MYPs from all around the UK and British Overseas Territories descended upon Westminster to debate in the Houses of Parliament, and I happened to be one of those MYPs. I also happened to be part of the lucky ones who were chosen to speak, which you can watch on BBC iPlayer (starts at 23:09, requires TV license) or ParliamentLive.

A few highlights from the event:

  • The lovely opening remarks from the Speaker
  • The amazing speech from Dev Sharma on the environment
  • The speeches from the Overseas territories (the first time they’ve been represented in the Commons)
  • The awe-inspiring speech from Izzy Garbutt on education that (deservedly) went viral afterwards
  • The one taking my award for most comedic moment; when the entire Scottish bench got up and walked out (to catch a flight) as soon as John Nicolson MP began to speak (context – he’s Scottish)

KYCC November Meeting

Given that this was the last meeting before the elections (don’t fret, I have a year left) this was mostly a quiet meeting, with not that much here or there. The Feeling Safe in Kent group session mostly consisted with winding down and reflecting on the year we had, as well as discussing the future that lies ahead of us. The UKYP group was mostly still involved in regular business (given that our group has a 2 year term, not a 1 year one) and we voted in favour of concentrating our campaigning on drugs, alcohol, and vaping. We also created a statement in response to the Dover attack (read below), and formulated a letter to MPs on the situation in Manston.

KYCC Statement on the Manston attack

KYCC is shocked and horrified at the attack on the Western Jet Foil immigration centre and our hearts go out to all affected. We condernn the acts of the perpetrator and insist that they do not represent Kent in any manner. Young people should be reassured that police (at this time) believe that he acted alone and there is little risk of further attacks.

And that’s the end of your November update! Come back this time next month to hear about my December, follow me on socials @HadynCutler for things as they happen, and subscribe below to never miss a blog post!
