Your January Update

We’re only a month through 2023 and I have lots to share, so let’s jump right in.

KYCC’s January Meeting

Feeling Safe in Kent (FSiK) campaign group

FSiK is back for 2023, due to funding from to Kent & Medway Violence Reduction Unit, so a massive thank you to them!

We started the year by discussing how the group would operate, and we decided to split off into 3 groups: Personal safety, Public safety, & School safety. I joined the Public group, in which we decided to create a youth-oriented Ask For Angela scheme in Kent, targeting shops & public transport.

I have since learned that there is an Ask For Angela scheme operational in Kent, but it seems that after a wave of promotion in 2021, it is now largely unheard of, and I will therefore be proposing at the next meeting that we establish a relationship with Kent Police and work with them to expand and promote the scheme.

UKYP project group

Kent MYPs were told about the upcoming YouthCon, held in London. This is a conference dedicated to youth voice and is a chance for us to network with our colleagues as well as to recieve training to improve our MYP careers.

We also discussed our new campaign regarding drugs, alcohol, and vaping, and after much discussion and debate we decided to establish a relationship with Trading Standards and invite them in to discuss current efforts surrounding ID check enforcement.

Community Services Consultation

Watch KCC’s short explainer on the Community Services Consultation.

KCC is currently running a consultation on the use of council buildings in an effort to save money through co-location and closure. If you use a council service affected, it is highly recommended you fill out the consultation with your questions and concerns.

Electoral Commission Young Champion Project

I’ve been selected to work with the Electoral Commission & Participation people on the Young Chamption project! This involves creating educational resources for young people regarding democracy, consultations on projects undertaken by the commission, and supporting Welcome To Your Vote week (more on that later).

We’ve had one meeting so far acting as an introduction to the project, and will be having another meeting today regarding…

Welcome To Your Vote week (WTYVW)

If you’re reading this the day it’s posted, that means that you’re in the middle of WTYVW! Take this as an opportunity to learn about your vote, campaigning, and how to vote. Your school can also get involved, with lesson & assembly plans available.

And that’s January wrapped up! I already have a lot planned for February, and from Transit96 to conventions, it’s going to be a fun month.

Thanks for reading,

Hadyn

[…] Last month, I briefly mentioned WTYVW, and it was a resounding success. Thank you to everyone who engaged with the content and resources I shared. If you missed it, the Electoral Commission has a wealth of information on voting in the UK. […]
