— Embargoed until 30th Nov —
Today, I can officially announce that I have been elected as one of Maidstone’s new youth councillors. I am so grateful that the electorate chose me as one of the people qualified enough to represent them, and I can promise that I will do them proud.
I will immediately get to work on fufilling my manifesto promises, with many ideas turning in to solutions surrounding my key promises: better transport, better policing, better democracy, and better everything.
What does a youth councillor do?
We are your representatives at the local government level, so, at the county level*, we represent you when it comes to decisions surrounding education**, transport, planning, fire and public safety, social care, libraries, waste management, and trading standards.
*depending on your county and the specific divisions of power in different areas
**part managed by national government
KYCC is often consulted when it comes to decisions surrounding young people, with areas like youth hubs, council services, and public transport all being put to us before.
We also have campaign and project groups, where we run year-long projects aiming to improve specific areas. This year’s campaign groups are: free school meals and tackling poverty, public transport, and mental health.
Finally, we help run certain events like the Big Mental Health Conversation, the Try Angle Awards, and the Kent Hope Hack.
If you do have any questions regarding the election, or my term ahead, do get in touch.

NOTE: Unfortunately, I have only been elected for a half-term (one year, up for renewal in Nov 2024). This is likely due to failings in my campaign caused by the fact I was also doing my mocks at the same time as juggling the elections. However, this will not deter me or my work. Also, due to some idiosyncratic rules surrounding how KYCC works, this may end up being extended in various scenarios, which I will not go into detail here. All I can say is watch this space.
